You can find the Rebreather in Cave A, also known as the Coastal or Rebreather Cave, located along the northern coastline of the island.
To pinpoint its exact location, open your in-game map. Cave A is situated in the northern part of the island, specifically on the northeastern shoreline near a beach. If you happen to spawn near the beach at the start of your game, you might be close to this cave. Look for bodies impaled on the shoreline as a visual cue. From the beach, head towards the forest, and you should spot an alcove with yellow cans outside of it. If approaching from another direction, scan the area where the beach meets the water for yellow cans floating in the sea. The cave entrance will be boarded up, requiring you to use an axe to break through the wooden planks. After clearing the entrance, press âEâ to squeeze inside.
Navigating the Rebreather Cave
Upon entering Cave A, youâll find it to be quite dark. While your lighter (activated with âLâ) can provide some illumination, a crafted torch (made with Cloth and a Stick) or a Flashlight will be more effective.
The first area inside the cave features a flashing red light from a laptop and a smaller light to the right. Interact with the laptop to mark the Entertainment Bunker on your GPS map. This area also contains lootable cases and resources like Flares and 9mm Ammo. Crucially, before proceeding, collect the Air Tank located to the right of the laptop; itâs necessary for the Rebreather youâre about to acquire.
Continue deeper into the cave. Youâll pass two bodies, near one of which you can find âThe Sunset Timesâ newspaper clipping. Follow the linear path until you reach a blue-lit section. Bats will fly out as you approach. Crouch to pass under a low ceiling, moving past hanging skeletons. The path remains linear, leading to another lit room with a floating rubber ring. Beyond this point, you will encounter your first two enemies in the cave. You can either engage them or run past them.
After passing the enemies, the path splits. The left path leads directly to the Rebreather.
Additional Loot in the Rebreather Cave
While the left path leads to the Rebreather, itâs recommended to explore the right path first to collect other valuable items. The right path is initially linear and narrow. Youâll pass a body on the left and enter a larger, open space with skeletons hanging from the ceiling. To the left of these, you can break boxes.
Further along this path, you will encounter mutants. If youâre not prepared for a fight, you can bypass them by running. Youâll then see crosses and reach a section with stalagmites and a dead body slumped against them.
From this point, turn right. Youâll hear a radio playing, which is suspended from the ceiling and can be collected. Beneath the radio, thereâs a laptop. This path leads to a dead end, but you will find the Stun Gun on a hanging body. Encounter mutant babies shortly before reaching the Stun Gun.
After collecting the Stun Gun, return to the slumped body and turn left. Youâll see more crosses and boards. Break through these boards to find an Artifact piece.
Once you have secured these items, return to the main split in the path and take the left route to finally acquire the Rebreather. The Rebreather is found on a body at the end of the left path.
